Booklet for students who are about to conduct independent research

If, as a student, you are planning to conduct independent research (either on your own or in a group) as part of your studies and if you will be handling personal data, you must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This “privacy law” requires you to collect, use, store, and ultimately destroy that personal data in a responsible manner.

To help you with this, we’ve put together a booklet that explains a number of commonly used terms and clearly outlines what is expected of you when you work with people’s personal data. Click the button below to download the booklet.

What is personal data?

In many types of research, you come into contact with personal data. The term “personal data” is much broader than just names, addresses, phone numbers, or photos. Any information that can be traced back to a specific person falls under the definition of “personal data.” This includes recordings of interviews and answers to your questions—at least if someone other than yourself and the interviewee knows (or can find out) who provided those answers. So even if you don’t ask for a name but do ask about many other things (such as age, place of birth, occupation, place of residence, and number of children), that combination can be so specific that it qualifies as “personal data.”

Booklet for student associations

Are you on the board of a student association, or are you simply concerned about data protection and privacy as a member of such an association? If so, you can consult a specially compiled booklet: The GDPR in 10 Questions (and Answers). In it, you’ll learn what requirements the GDPR imposes on associations like yours. And more generally: how to handle personal data responsibly.
